==== 1. Government Snafu Highlights the Importance of Backups and Restores ====
by David Chernicoff, david@windowsitpro.com

It's always a relief when a previous expensive lesson that happens to highlight a common IT problem happens to someone else and not you. It's even better when you have the information that caused the problem and can cite it when upper management asks why you're spending the company's money on something. In this case, we have an incident that highlights the importance of backups and, more importantly, restores, in a well-documented and irrefutable fashion. Hopefully this isn't the first time you've heard about this monumental foul-up.

Last June, the Alaska Department of Revenue, which holds the keys to the $38,000,000,000 Permanent Fund that pays out a tax rebate each year to every qualified resident of Alaska, managed to completely lose the database that contained more than 800,000 PDF files of the applications for the funds they distribute (which in 2006, came to a little over $1600 per applicant). The Alaska Department of Revenue lost its database in a very simple way–by accidentally deleting it.

==== News from the Industry ====
by Blake Eno, products@windowsitpro.com

Yahoo! Announces Unlimited Email Storage

Since Yahoo! recently announcing unlimited email storage (starting in May 2007) to its users, it's hard not to think of Yahoo! as a viable archive for my various emails and attachments–both work and personal-use. Yahoo! joins other free email services such as Google's Gmail, which maxes out at 2.8GB of email storage, and Microsoft, which caps out at 2GB of email storage, to add to the options for alternative email archives available to business and home users. As an IBM Lotus Notes user, I've often been prompted by IT that my mailbox is reaching its limit and have found myself forwarding certain emails to my Yahoo! or Gmail accounts. I plan to continue using these free email services to offload some of my larger attachments (especially digital photos and PDFs). How do you plan to handle the overwhelming amount of emails that floods your inbox? I know that I'll definitely take advantage of Yahoo!'s unlimited email storage.
==== New and Improved ====
by Blake Eno, products@windowsitpro.com

Reap the Benefits of DAS and iSCSI SAN

Zetera released a new line of networked storage solutions for small-to-midsized businesses (SMBs), Zetera networked bunch of disks (NBOD), that bridges the gap between DAS and iSCSI SANs. Zetera NBOD offers the benefits of SAN, enabling one or more servers to share the storage of single or multiple NBOD devices, along with the simplicity of DAS, requiring minimal skills to deploy, configure, and manage the storage system. Zetera NBOD is based on the company's Z-SAN architecture, which simultaneously optimizes four factors of a network storage system: scalability, performance, reliability, and cost. Zetera NBOD storage solutions are available in 1U rack-mount ($2,699) and 4-bay desktop ($2,199) solutions. For more information, visit Zetera on the Web at:

iSCSI-Based SAN Appliances for SMBs

Kano Technologies announced the NetCOR IP-SAN Enterprise Series, a family of iSCSI-based SAN appliances for the small-to-midsized business (SMB) market. NetCOR IP-SAN appliances provide a single management console to centralize server storage and feature Intel hardware and 3ware 9650SE RAID controllers. NetCOR IP-SAN can be deployed within a single rack-mounted appliance over existing Gigabit Ethernet networks. The NetCOR IP-SAN appliances are offered in 1U, 2U, and 3U rack-mount models, with base models starting with four SATA II hard disks installed at 1TB. NetCOR IP-SAN appliances start at $3,299. ==== FAQs ====
by John Savill, FAQ Editor, jsavill@windowsitpro.com

Q. How can I extract the files from a Windows Vista Microsoft Update Standalone Package (MSU)?

A. The new MSU format doesn't support the old /x type switches to extract the content. It also can't be run on a pre-Vista OS. To extract the content from an MSU file, you need to use the Expand command that's part of Vista. Note that the Expand command from earlier versions of Windows are different and won't work. Use the -F switch to extract the content, as the following example shows:

D:\temp>mkdir msu

D:\temp>expand -F:* Windows6.0-KB929761-x86.msu d:\temp\msu

The command produces the following output:

Adding d:\temp\msu\WSUSSCAN.cab to Extraction Queue
Adding d:\temp\msu\Windows6.0-KB929761-x86.cab to Extraction Queue
Adding d:\temp\msu\Windows6.0-KB929761-x86-pkgProperties.txt to Extraction Queue

Adding d:\temp\msu\Windows6.0-KB929761-x86.xml to Extraction Queue

Expanding Files …

Expanding Files Complete … 4 files total.

At this point, the .cab files, which contain the actual files, are still not extracted, so now run the extract command on the cab file, as the following command and resulting output shows:

D:\temp>expand -F:* d:\temp\msu\Windows6.0-KB929761-x86.cab d:\temp\msu

Adding d:\temp\msu\update.mum to Extraction Queue
Adding d:\temp\msu\x86_microsoft-windows-wusa_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.20496_no
ne_ab489c6034d78613.manifest to Extraction Queue
Adding d:\temp\msu\x86_microsoft-windows-
wusa_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16400_no
ne_ab1a4f0b1b764fed.manifest to Extraction Queue
Adding d:\temp\msu\update-bf.mum to Extraction Queue
Adding d:\temp\msu\x86_microsoft-windows-
wusa.d_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.20496_
none_4632ef2815ba2cfd.manifest to Extraction Queue
Adding d:\temp\msu\x86_microsoft-windows-
wusa.d_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16400_
none_4604a1d2fc58f6d7.manifest to Extraction Queue
Adding d:\temp\msu\update.cat to Extraction Queue
Adding d:\temp\msu\update-bf.cat to Extraction Queue
Adding d:\temp\msu\x86_microsoft-windows-
wusa_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16400_no
ne_ab1a4f0b1b764fed\wusa.exe to Extraction Queue
Adding d:\temp\msu\x86_microsoft-windows-
wusa_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.20496_no
ne_ab489c6034d78613\wusa.exe to Extraction Queue

Expanding Files ….

Expanding Files Complete … 10 files total. ——————–

Q. How can I check driver availability for my Creative Technology product under Windows Vista?

A. Creative maintains a list of Vista drivers for all its hardware at http://us.creative.com/support/kb/article.asp?sid=14186 .

——————–

Q. Can I upgrade to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 from Exchange Server 5.5?

A. No. You can't introduce Exchange 2007 into an existing Exchange organization while an Exchange 5.5 server still exists in the organization. If you run Exchange 5.5, you must first upgrade to Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003, effectively Exchange native mode. After you move the mailboxes to an Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 organization, you can move the mailboxes to Exchange 2007 via the Exchange 2007 GUI if Exchange 2007 and the Exchange 2003/2000 installation are in the same organization or by using the Power Shell Move-Mailbox command for cross-organization migrations.

——————–

Q. What is the new licensing scheme that is part of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2)?

A. With SQL Server 2005 SP2, you can now run an unlimited number of virtual instances of SQL Server on a physical box that's licensed for SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition. This will allow organizations to try new combinations of SQL Server instances to test the performance of their servers. ——————–

Q. How do I insert a single quote (') into a SQL Server database?

A. Usually the single quote character is reserved for inserting information into a database. If a single quote is contained in the actual data to be inserted, the command often becomes corrupted. To solve the problem simply replace any single quote with two quotes (not the double quote character but two single quote characters. The sample command below performs this replacement automatically:

sContent = Replace(sContent,"'","'")

where sContent contains the data that needs single quotes replaced so that the data can be inserted into a database.
